Turns out the brake pads, while premium, were defective. Community replaced the pads right away and at no charge. Integrity!!!

Comment: I made the right choice!I moved back to the Grand Rapids area back in September 2019. Shortly after moving here I bought a new (to me) car. Whenever I get to a new area I look for three specific buisness to become a regular at. A barber, a coffee shop and a mechanic. I did all my research online mainly via reviews and landed on Community Automotive. The first expirience I had was when I brought my car in for an inspection. I did not get one before I bought the car. (Shame on me.) They completed the inspection rather quickly and gave me list of suggestions but did not try to pressure me into getting any expensive work done right away. I ended up coming back a couple months later to go ahead and get that suggested work done. I did everything but the brakes they suggested. Now that leads me to my one and only gripe. I did not get the brakes done because they wanted over $500 just for the front brakes and that seemed high to me. But they completed everything else for me in a nice timely manner. And when I had a small issue relating to the maintenance performed I came back and the adjusted the issue quickly and for free! Kevin specifically is the one who I had the most contact with and he was very helpful.This place has a few horror story reviews, but I learned that in most cases those are retaliation for something the customer probably messed up or misunderstood. And it seems Community Automotive apologized and fessed up to any mistakes they KNOW they made. So dont let those scary 1 star reviews keep you away.All in all, I will probably be returning to this shop as long as the quality of service stays the same!Thanks guys!2023 Update:I recently purchased a new to me 2001 E320 Mercedes-Benz. I was experiencing an odd electrical problem with the car, so I brought it in for diagnosis. I had an idea of what was causing the issue but wanted an expert to look at it. The diagnosis I was provided with made no sense with the symptoms I was advising. I feel as though this was a fault of communication between the service advisor and the actual mechanic. I asked to speak with the mechanic and was just told he was too busy. I ended up paying over $400 for an oil change and a diagnosis that was completely unhelpful and incorrect as I found the problem. I was almost charged another almost $400 for something that would have not solved my problem.I went home and fixed the problem myself for $200. I am disappointed because I had such good experiences 2 years ago with my Subaru. I am not sure if I will return or not.

Comment: I went in to have the door wiring troubleshot and some wheel vibration fixed. The vibration is almost gone but what I spent money on was the door and they replaced only the motor , the motor as i explainedwas never the issue its the new module i installed. Oh yeah and I mentioned my drivers door didnt lock and they left it in an unlocked lot with my door fully unlocked as I mentioned before. It was driven maybe ten miles is all and I still have vibration at anything considered acceleration . They did great with my grandmothers saab 9-5 04 but not my 9-3 06 . Would be nice to be heard when I say things like i know whats wrong with it heres all my money. Dont figure it out fix it.

There was an open-checkbook to make sure that the vehicle was in as good as shape as can be expected in a classic car. The total cost to fix-it-up was much less than I expected. Comment: I have two cars that I have been taking to Community Auto for years. My BMW and Range Rover have enough years and miles on them to be approaching the classic stage. Most recently, I needed a complete engine refurbishing/exchange on the Rover. After contracting for the new engine with a reputable establishment on the east coast, the staff at CAR did the exchange. When the engine failed to perform to the warranty, CAR came to the rescue. Todd made this a personal mission and was consistent and assertive with the establishment who rebuilt the engine, (which originally tried to bow out with a technicality). We got another engine and the staff at CAR did the labor to once again exchange engines...at no additional cost.I am thoroughly pleased with the honesty and professional service over the years. Problems are always discussed and any confusion is resolved in a manner that shows integrity. I am glad that I found CAR. I live in Lansing and work in Grand Rapids.The professionalism at CAR is worth the drive.

Comment: I have a 1967 Mustang convertible that Ive had issues with road vibration for about five years now. Ive been to three other shops and not one was able to help. I had heard about Community Automotive and noticed the do work on a lot of classic cars so I decided to stop in one day. They preformed a vibration test and quickly determined what was needed. Kevin, the service manager kept me notified as work was taking place and parts we being located. . A few days before I was to pick up the car, they noticed another issue that needed to be repaired. Kevin told me that theyd have the car done the following Monday, when he found out I had wanted to attend a car show on Saturday, he made an effort to locate the parts needed and to get the car finished by Friday afternoon. When I went to pick it up, Kevin was in the lot washing may car so it was ready for the show Saturday. Im a customer for life. Very professional and honest service. Comment: I had our 2012 Subaru Forester into a different automotive repair shop three times within 18 months for a/c issues, and the problem was not resolved. Because of Community Automotive’s reputation, we took our car to their shop for diagnostics and, ultimately, repair. The shop was honest in their assessment of what they thought the problem was and gave me a cost estimate along with an estimate of the time it would take to complete the repair. I entrusted my Forester to their care, and 10 days following their work, the a/c is still working. The cost estimate and the length of time to complete the repair were both accurate. We are very satisfied.

Kyle helped me out and he was great, so helpful and very very nice. A different place told me I had 5 things wrong with my car, that would’ve cost me an additional $700 to fix, the folks at Community Auto looked into those 5 things and said everything is fine. Comment: I had ongoing issues with slow leaks in three tires. I didnt know anything about tire bead leak as a potential source of the problem, however on my first call to Community Auto, it was mentioned as a possibility. Scheduling was within an appropriate amount of time, easy, and with a friendly and knowledgeable staff person. I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up my car that not only was the leak problem fixed at a great rate, but when my vehicle was presented by someone who drove it to meet me at the front of the shop, it had been washed and dried on the exterior, and was warm. Maybe a small details, but it was well-appreciated. I had previously had my vehicles serviced at the dealer for decades, but this shop has changed my mind about where to go for future service needs. I will be returning and highly recommend using them.

Comment: When it came time to get a new oil pan put on my Volvo wagon due to a previous error from someone elses work, Community Auto really came through. Out of all the shops I called, they gave me the clearest quote, didnt require me to come in and pay for a diagnosis, and laid out all the work they planned to do well ahead of time. When I brought the car in for service, they were friendly and helpful, and the work was done within the day even though I had expected it to potentially take longer. While it cost a bit more than I initially expected to pay, Im very happy with the work that was done, the prompt and friendly service, and I will be returning for future routine maintenance on my vehicle. They were also kind and understanding about a few things I decided to skip on this visit, and kept me apprised of other areas of the vehicle that will need attention in the future. Comment: A few years ago we bought a 2003 SAAB 93 Cab that had never seen winter and was stored for 7 years. We are both SAAB nuts and I have owned many. The car had 65k on it and like all b205 and 207 engines are prone to clogged oil pickups. This having low miles I did not have the pan dropped and was going to have it done at 100k. BAD MOVE! at 80k I got a flickering oil light. I searched for a SAAB specialist shop to have the pan dropped and cleaned along with the PCV update. Got the car back and 70 miles later the dreaded oil light. Bearing damage had already occurred but until the engine was run for a time to get to quite hot it was within tolerance. Spoke with Kevin and Todd and bit the Bullitt, time for a new engine. Found a low mileage with a 5 year 5k warranty and had it installed.The car is like new, drives perfectly because of the attention to detail of Community Automotive.They are not the cheapest nor the fastest, they are the best. In the end that is all that matters.

I needed major exhaust work done on my Subaru but the dealer in town wanted waaaay too much for it. Two of the windows has also fallen at the same time. I called around different car shops in Grand Rapids before going to Community Auto and am so glad I did! Comment: I bought a very rare Audi in Grand Rapids, and within hours of buying it, it left me stranded on the highway jsut outside of town. A friend recommended these guys so we had it towed there. The car is imported so parts were hard to get, but they worked with me to find it overseas. Their communication was consistent and I always knew what was going on even though I was home in MA. They quickly diagnosed the issue to the electric fuel pump and didnt do anything unnecessary. They fit me in the schedule and even were patient for me to organize getting the car shipped. The staff calls me with the diagnosis of whats wrong with the car, and the cost of repairs, and I decide.....no surprises at the end. Im not sure, but I suspect they are not the absolute cheapest repair shop around here....but the service can be relied upon. Its worth it.

Dave and his team have integrity and truly want to help you out--even if youre not going to do business with them.We took our car for a check-up for something that tends to go wrong with it, and Dave let us know that thing was fine, but our timing chain was on the verge of going bad. We had recently bought the car and had a limited warranty from the dealership, so we let him know that we were going to see if theyd cover part of the cost to fix it. Even though Dave didnt know if we were going to do business with them, he told us what to ask about, what to listen for them to say, and exactly what needed to be fixed. Comment: I took my Audi in last week and told the guys at community automotive what issues needed to be fixed. They speak in a way that someone who doesnt understand the inner workings of cars would understand fairly clearly. I knew what my issues were so they went ahead and fixed those issues and did a very fairly priced check for other issues. They texted me with updates every time something came up in a very timely manor. But the cherry on top was a 400$ heater core backflush that they openly say is not a 100% guarantee on success which saved me 400$. These guys are honest, courteous, and the only major shop that I have gotten a genuine sense of care for the customer from. Go here.

Comment: First of all, Im not sure why this review is listed under my wifes name. That being said, Im quite satisfied with the service at Community Auto Repair. I brought the car in earlier than my appointment date due to an error on my part and they were able to keep the car at the shop until it could be worked on. Todd was very thorough in describing the issues with my Volkswagen Harlequin and Dick picked up the baton when Todd was on vacation. There was a glitch in communication at the end and the car was there longer than expected but since it is not my daily transportation car, that wasnt a serious issue. I was concerned that the car would be damaged and/or quite dirty after sitting at the shop for over a week, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was in the same condition it was in when I delivered it and had been washed before I picked it up. The transmission repairs were completed professionally and the car shifts better than it ever has since Ive owned it. The cost was within estimates. Comment: These guys were good overall. I went in because of a concern with my suspension. They determined that replacing the bushings would fix the noise coming from the car and it did just that. The shop was clearly very busy when I took it in and yet they wrapped it up in only a couple of days.The service was great, the only hiccup occurred with the payment, which was significantly larger than I expected. There seemed to have been some confusion over the phone, when I was quoted for service. However, they ultimately resolved this, giving me a really generous discount. In the end, it was a good experience.

Comment: This place is great. My girlfriend and I have used them for some time (well technically she longer than me) and have had nothing but the best experiences time after time. We both have European cars and they can do anything the dealerships can and usually cheaper and more upfront about what is needed versus what will be needed down the line. Preventative maintenance is great but too often with dealerships its overdone to the extreme. Talk to these guys (Dave in particular) if you want great service, great prices, and a trusted/knowledgable opinion.

Ive had issues at past garages trying to get a hold of someone who can tell me what is wrong with my car, but at Community Auto, Todd was always there when I called, which felt very comforting when I had questions or concerns. The quality in their work was unparalleled. I live in Buffalo, NY, and go to school in Grand Rapids, so when my car died three weeks before the end of the semester, I was very freaked out. Comment: When I went in to get my ball joints replaced, I made an appointment for 7am, they called me at 5pm and told me my vehicle was done. I went down there and there was a mix up with the paperwork; nobody worked on my vehicle at all that day despite my appointment. However, they made the right decisions and handled the issue quite well. The following day, they started on it first thing in the morning and were finished at about lunchtime. Not only did they fix my balljoints, but they also replaced my wipers, fixed a brake light, gave her a carwash, oiled up the door hinges, along with other miscellaneous upkeep. Comment: Community Automotive Repair is an excellent repair shop! My girlfriend and I each bring our vehicles there and the staff does great work at a fair price. I am a graduate student with limited funds and the folks there always do the job right the first time around. I have mainly interacted with Todd but the whole staff seems to be of high quality.My most recent service was a transmission fluid exchange with filter replacement, plus I had them inspect & adjust the serpentine belt in my 2004 Forester. I dropped it off for my 8 am appointment and they had it finished well before they closed at 5:30 on the same day. My Subaru now runs better and shifts cleaner than ever since I bought it secondhand this past September. I even made an appointment next week for a complete brake service and have full confidence in their abilities and advice.Overall they are a great local shop who take the time to understand your needs and budget. Dave told me to come in right away, as it sounded like my alternator was going bad. Comment: I had the best experience here! My car had quite a few issues when I had to tow it there suddenly, and it drove better than ever when I got it back! It was so helpful that I was able to use one of their rentals while it was briefly in the shop (Hertz is over twice the price). They helped me with a lot of other details like rusted panels coming off also, and even washed it for me when it was done. Comment: You get what you pay for. This shop is the only shop Ill take my car to in Grand Rapids. Its been that way since I moved here 6 years ago. I understand what other people say about paying more here, and Im just fine with the higher dollar amount because Im getting incredible quality, great warranties and like Muhammad said, Im getting trust. Dave and the guys as Community Auto have never tried to hike up prices with me. In fact, I find that theyre often open to a little friendly, reasonable compromise if you are on a tight budget. If all youre looking for is a quick fix for your problem, by all means, take your vehicle somewhere else because you might be able to save a couple bucks. But if you are investing in your vehicle, and you understand that quality is worth some extra money, this is your place. I think their longevity speaks for itself in that respect.
